Landscape design usually starts with a base layout—a 2D plane. Below is a typical landscape plan (by ES) for a space between some buildings. Note how easy it is to read the designer’s intentions.
This movie shows how easily we can read the design and determine how the spaces might be used. Notice that including a pergola and large deciduous trees shows that even though the design is 2D, the 3D elements are considered.

In contrast, the design below is much more difficult to determine the designer’s intentions. It is not clear how pedestrian traffic is managed and opportunities for ”break out’ spaces have been missed.
